Ahmed El-Sebaey, member of the Export Council for Food Industries, confirmed that Egypt’s wheat imports reached approximately 2 million tons in October 2025, marking the highest monthly level this year and a 28.7% increase compared to September. This reflects the continued ability of the Egyptian market to secure strategic needs despite global market fluctuations.

Developments in the Egyptian Wheat Market

El-Sebaey reviewed the latest developments in the Egyptian wheat market in 2025 during the “Global Grain 2025” conference, Global Grain Geneva, held in Geneva, one of the largest international conferences specializing in the grain sector.

He added that total imports from January to October amounted to 10.87 million tons, averaging 1.09 million tons per month, below the 2024 average of 1.22 million tons. This indicates that Egypt is expected to end 2025 with a total import decline of 15–20%, in line with increased domestic production.

Ukraine Advances in Supplies for the First Time

El-Sebaey highlighted a notable shift in Egypt’s wheat import sources. Dependence on Russian wheat fell from 74% to 56% in 2025, while Ukraine’s share jumped from 13% to 31%. France’s share increased from 1.2% to 3.6%, and Romania’s share declined from 6.6% to 4.6%.

He noted that in September 2025, for the first time in years, Ukrainian supplies surpassed Russian supplies, with Ukraine accounting for 48.5% compared to 47.4% for Russia. This development was described as a “pivotal milestone” in diversifying Egypt’s sources of wheat supply.
